Just over two years ago we spent a month on tour with the (awesome) crew from Acacia Africa. Following our return home it’s all that’s been on our minds and here’s why we’re going back, so quickly.
Africa is more often than not on everyone’s bucket list but travellers so often find it easier to jump on a plane to Europe! Whilst we loved our time in Europe and would happily go back we craved something a little different.
If you’re looking for your next travel destination why not (seriously) consider Africa?
It is such a vast and diverse continent, full of interesting cultures, remarkable scenery and incredible animals. Africa offers some of the most amazing travel experiences in the world.
Where we’ve been and where we’re going
In 2014 we spent four weeks travelling through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi and Zambia.
This time around we’re off for another month to experience South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia (again!) and Zimbabwe.
Why we chose to travel overland?
As with our last trip we’ll be overlanding throughout Africa.
Overlanding is a self-reliant method of travel to remote destinations. Typically, but not exclusively, the principal method of transport is in a truck whilst you camp along the way.
We decided to travel the overland route, as we wanted to experience the real Africa, meet the locals, visit the communities and experience everything we possibly could.
Often when flying from one city to the next you don’t get to experience this and for us getting there is half the fun!
Camping is all part of the excitement too! It allows you to truly immerse in the experience. Nothing beats being out in the open, setting up your tent whilst zebra’s roam through your campsite!
Where do I start?
Many people who think about travelling to Africa think about safari, while this is hands down one of the most incredible experiences there is so much more available too.
But how easy is it to organize? How do I decide what countries to visit? What about accommodation?
Let’s start with what you’re after and where to go. Africa provides such a wide variety of destinations offering different travel experiences it’s all at your fingertips.
Want to spot the Big 5? Why not explore Kruger National Park in South Africa?
Perhaps you’re after a coastal escape? Why not explore Cape Town in South Africa or the stunning white sandy beaches on Zanzibar Island, Tanzania
Looking to experience one of the greatest migrations on earth? Look no further than the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya and the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania?
Maybe even a trek with the gorillas is on your mind? Explore the forests of Uganda and Rwanda.
