What’s the one thing we all wish we had more of…? Time!
Like most people we have full time jobs and only have limited time off work to travel and explore the world.
So what better way to see Africa than on an overland trip jam-packed full of fun and adventure.
We jumped onboard with Acacia Africa on a 25 day trip through 5 countries!
Travelling through Africa is an experience like no other, compelling you to return again and again, and we’d know, this is our second visit!
The best bit about this style of tour and this way of travel is how much you can see and experience in a short amount of time, and that won’t break the bank.
If you like a fast pace and lots of adventure and activities then this is for you. Everyday is a new experience, a chance to explore, like nothing you’ve done before.
Africa is a continent known for its wild animal encounters, dramatic landscapes, fascinating culture and stunning beaches. It promises so much and didn’t disappoint.
South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana and Namibia in just 25 days!
While we won’t go through day by day let’s pick out those unforgettable highlights, the stories you tell your friends, the moments you daydream about.
Safari, Safari, Safari
Safari’s by day, safari’s by night, by boat, by foot, by mokoro (canoe) there really was everything. Not to mention all the wildlife, the vast and ever changing landscape.
We spotted the Big 5 and so much more we really were spoilt by this incredible experience to go on safari again and again, taking none of it for granted.
Sleeping Under the Stars
As we left the dry and diverse Etosha National Park in Namibia we ventured towards this unfamiliar place called Spitzkoppe in what feels like another planet.
We climbed and explored the ancient rock formations, the granite more than 120 million years old.
Our campsite set at the foot of these peaks was not where we chose to sleep for the night, rather climbing a top of one of this amazing rocks, sleeping bag, pillow and vodka in hand we slept under the stars.
If you’re a climber, a geologist, a stargazer, an every day explorer then this is one for you!
What goes up must come down
Reaching the top, exhausted but excited, the adrenaline pumping we were heading straight back down to the bottom but not by foot!
Rather on a piece of plywood, head first, travelling at 60 – 70 kpm (37 – 43 mph) down the face of a sand dune in the Namib Desert.
Madness right!? A simply unforgettable experience (and with the t-shirt to prove it!)
Out in the Wilderness
Africa is a vast and ever changing continent; travelling through five very different countries we experienced this first hand.
Check out these photos below to see just how much it changes.
Elephants, elephants everywhere!
Botswana is a place where there are seemingly more elephants than people! You pass them on the side of the road, they’re roaming through your campsite.
At Elephant Sands we experienced this first hand, when at 3AM in the morning, woken by the faintest rustle, we popped our heads up to watch an elephant casually stroll past our tent, heading for the waterhole, unaware (or not bothered) by our presence.
Think it’s expensive?
Overlanding is a self-reliant method of travel to remote destinations. Typically, but not exclusively, the principal method of transport is in a truck whilst you camp along the way.
With fellow likeminded travellers in tow, it’s a fun and interactive way to travel.
To help with the affordability this style of trip is all about the outdoors and being hands on. From setting up your own tent and camping in the wilderness, to cooking and cleaning support along the way.
The early mornings, late nights and long days are in our opinion most definitely worth it!
Above are only a handful of the incredible experiences that we had.
With so much more on offer check out the tour we did with Acacia Africa.
If you’re short on time and want to experience as much a possible in this fascinating continent then this is the way to do it.
